Role:

We are seeking members for our Sunset Park Community Advisory Board to support our grantmaking process in Sunset Park. Board Members will be Sunset Park residents who are committed to building a thriving neighborhood, are open to sharing their experiences as well as learning from others, and can commit to all the activities of the Board through February 2027. We are seeking members who represent a diversity of ages, identities, geographic parts of the community, lived and work experiences.


Board Members do not need have previous experience with grantmaking, grants, or nonprofits to be considered.


We will review all applications and contact potential finalists for a brief phone interview. Advisory Board Members will be selected by the end of September.


Our Community Advisory Board will support the project in the following ways:

  • Setting priorities for the fund, based on their own experience and expertise, listening tours, and feedback from community members.    
  • Providing feedback on RFP, application, outreach, and process.     
  • Reviewing and scoring applications submitted using a rubric and our online portal. 
  • Attending a convening to discuss applications and determine grantees. 

Eligibility:

  • Currently live in Sunset Park. 
  • Not in Senior Leadership at a non-profit organization based in Sunset Park. 
  • Able to read and review grant applications written in English, and submit scores in the online portal. 
  • Must commit to three in-person meetings: 
    • October 5, 6 PM: Intro Convening 
    • Early January: Grant Review Training Convening* 
    • Late February: Grant Selection Convening* 
    • *Exact dates to be set based on availability of board members, once selected.

Expectations:

Community Board members are expected to: 

  • Attend all trainings and convenings for the Board. 
  • Complete their grant reviews by the deadline, including inputting scores and notes in our online portal. 
  • Act with integrity; review all grant applications in an unbiased manner. 
  • Share their experience, expertise, and opinions, as well as be open to learning about the experience, expertise, and opinions of others; treat all fellow board members with respect. 
  • Disclose any conflict of interest to the group and recuse themselves from review.
    • Conflict of interest includes a close personal or professional relationship with any applicant, being a current employee, board member, or paid consultant of the applicant; being regularly and closely involved with the applicant organization. 

Time Commitment and Payment:

The full time commitment is contingent upon the number of grant applications received. We estimate each board member will commit:


-          8 - 10 hours total to in-person meetings between October - February 

-          8 – 12 hours of review in the month of February 


Advisory Board Members will be paid for their time including meeting time and application review.


Fund Background 

The Sunset Park Special Purpose Projects Fund, administered by Brooklyn Org, will distribute funds from the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal back into the Sunset Park community using a participatory, community-led process.
